  Jan 2011 Laura Williams has joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Staff Architect. With a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Dickinson College and a Master of Architecture from the University of Maryland, Laura has a diverse background of study. Laura studied abroad in Rome and Scandinavia to gain a greater knowledge and appreciation for the relationship between the experience of architecture and how it is realized. She interned with Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS during the summer of 2009. Laura's Master's thesis focused on adaptability and flexibility in D.C. public schools and explored a system that allows schools to expand and contract using a pre-fabricated kit of parts.

Emily earned her Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and her Master's in Architecture from the University of Maryland. Her previous professional experience includes working on a number of multi-family residential buildings in the DC Metropolitan area. She interned with Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS during the summer of 2010. Emily's focus is on the design of meaningful communal and private spaces of varying scales; from the overall concept through to project details.

  Dec 2010 The International Monetary Fund has retained Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS to design a major renovation of the Concordia at 1250 New Hampshire Avenue, NW. The Concordia, originally constructed in 1965, is a ten-story 100,000 SF short-term stay executive training housing facility. The building will be fully renovated to yield 125,500SF studio apartments, shared amenities, and support space. The project includes complete removal and replacement of the building skin. The project will be designed to achieve a LEED Gold-NC certification.

  Dec 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been engaged by Clark Realty Capital to design a mixed-use building with 140 residential units, street front retail along 10th Street North, and a loading area and underground parking The site is located within the Clarendon Revitalization District. Split zoning will require both a 4.1 Site Plan and a Use Permit submission.

  Dec 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS transit oriented 4.4 million square foot mixed-use urban master plan for Capital One is cited in the Washington Post and local publications as an early submission for a Conceptual Development Plan in the sweepstakes for commercial density. Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is leading the urban design team. In addition to designing the master plan, the firm has designed a 500,000 square foot mixed-use building for Capital One, with parking for 1,000 cars as the first phase for a soon-to-be-filed Final Development Plan.

  Dec 2010 This article in DCMud "Tysons Takes on Colossal Development Projects" by Ken Johnson, features Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS design for Capital One's "high-density, mixed-used development near the Metro" as a positive sign that the newly adopted comprehensive plan is effective. "This is exactly the kind of transit-oriented development that the plan to transform Tysons calls for. The site plan calls for 5 millions square feet in total development - 2.1 million s.f. of office space rising as high as 392 feet, a thousand or so residential units rising 20 stories, as well as hotels, parks, plazas and retail, all connected to what will be a brand new Tysons East Metro station."   Dec 2010 The Macedonian is featured in the greendc daily article "Bonstra | Haresign Leading with EarthCraft Design" by Michael Kiefer. "The Macedonian is one of growing number of nationwide projects as part of the LIHTC (Low income housing tax credit) an initiative that seeks to incorporate a cadre of GREEN features as part of an understanding that higher performing buildings are meant for all levels of income. This project is a joint venture of sorts between MacedoniaBaptistChurch and AHC, Inc, an organization that seeks to promote strategic partnerships for affordable housing opportunities.   Dec 2010 David Baker, AIA, LEED AP and Matt Corell led a "Construction Watch Tour" of The Macedonian for the National Building Museum. The Macedonian Apartments is a 36-unit multi-family affordable housing conforming to the Nauck Village Center Action Plan. Located on Shirlington Road, the Macedonian contains one and two bedroom units with underground parking. The ground floor contains offices and a community room for the church's use. The Macedonian incorporates 10 major sustainable design strategies, and will be EarthCraft certified.   Dec 2010 In a feature article for Urban Land, "Adaptive Use Best Practices: an Interview with David Haresign" by Ron Nyrene, David notes that almost half of his work has involved restoration or adaptive use, including converting a historic school into condos, an old department store warehouse into a speculative office building, and an airplane parts warehouse into an office building for America Online.   Dec 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS presented its mixed-use, transit oriented urban development for Capital One at a Fairfax County government-sponsored open house. In an article in the Fairfax Times, the writer notes that "Capital One, just one of the large corporations that boast sprawling suburban campuses in today's Tysons, will transform its 26-acre property to take advantage of the Tysons East station, which sits at the gateway to the existing facility. Its proposal includes 4.9 million square feet of development spread across 12 new buildings. The existing lobby space lacks focus and a level of finish sufficient for a Class A office building in this market area. Upgrades will include selective finish, lighting, detailing and furnishing upgrades/improvements to the exterior entry/driveway, main lobby and elevator cabs.

  Dec 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded design services for the renovation of Juniper Gardens at Eastern Avenue and Juniper Street, NW. The complex consists of six, three-story multi-family residential apartment buildings totaling 71 units. As a Level 2 renovation, the project will include full replacement kitchens with high-end finishes and under-counter washer/dryer, renovated bathrooms, and replacement of HVAC systems, all windows and doors, lighting fixtures and roofs. Other significant improvements include public area finishes, landscape and site improvements, new entry canopies plus two new cellar units, large capacity communal laundry facilities and bicycle storage in each building.

  Nov 2010 Urban Investment Partners has retained Bonstra I Haresign ARCHITECTS to provide design services for the renovations of 1349 Kenyon Street, NW, a 28-unit, 4-story building plus basement building and 1346 Park Road, NW, an existing 21 unit, 3-story building with a basement in Columbia Heights. The Level 2 renovation will retain the historic character of the building, with improvements to include exterior improvements to the existing porches, replacement of existing exterior windows and doors, kitchen and bathroom replacement, new central air conditioning, reconfiguration of service and storage areas, additional units in the unfinished basement, and common area finishes.

  Oct 2010 King's Creek, LLC has retained Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS to provide conceptual design and an amended entitlements submission for the Brass Knob site at 2329/2335 Champlain Street, NW. The buildings' previous developers secured approval in May 2006 for a 22-unit multi-family residential conversion of a warehouse by adding two additional stories atop the existing buildings, with parking for 17-21 vehicles below grade.

  Sept 2010 Bill Bonstra, FAIA, LEED AP and Jennifer Marca, AIA, LEED AP led a "Construction Watch Tour" for National Building Museum of theWoodley Wardman Condominium, a 39 unit, 53,000 SF residential condominium located at 2818 Connecticut Avenue in historic Woodley Park, Washington, DC. The building is a 7-story residential tower with one level of below grade parking delicately placed behind 4 restored historic Wardman rowhouses. The contemporary design received unanimous approval from the Woodley Park Historic Society, the DC Historic Preservation Review Board and the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment.   Sept 2010 David Haresign, AIA has been elected 2011 Treasurer of AIA|DC. David will continue to serve on the Executive Committee and as co-chair of the Design Excellence Committee. David is co-chair of the 2012 AIA National Convention Host Chapter Committee with David Daleida, FAIA, and is a member of the 2012 AIA National Convention Advisory Committee. David also leads the Host Chapter Design Leadership Committee for the convention with the express mission of highlighting Washington's regional design strength.

  Sept 2010 William Bonstra, FAIA was appointed as a Senior Visiting Critic at the Catholic University of America School of Architecture for the Fall 2010 Semester. He leads a masters level studio course in the school's Real Estate Concentration. In October, he will lead the class in a study trip to Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington to explore their unique architecture, transit oriented development and planning principles, and sustainable design.

  Sept 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS design for Hello Cupcake II is featured in DCMud. Dupont Circle's Hello Cupcake is expanding to Barracks Row. Penny Karas, founder and owner of Hello Cupcake, juggles the tasks of a small business owner, and her husband Bill Bonstra and his colleagues at Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS have designed Hello Cupcake's newest location (705 8th Street SE) so that customers "will consume their sugary treats in a comfortable, colorful, and intelligently designed space."   Sept 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS entered the AIA|DC District Architecture Center competition. The design entry included plan organization that recalls the L'Enfant plan with a diagonal avenue overlaid on the building's horizontal grid anchored by a circle at the entrance and terminal vista within the Center. A gallery parallels the street offering opportunities for display of the firm's award winning work, along with projects from other firms. Major spaces, including an auditorium, classrooms and a resource center lined the avenue. Staff areas and support spaces are discreetly tucked behind the major public areas. A large new floor opening with a monumental stair provides vertical connection and light to additional below-grade classrooms and offices. Unfortunately, the judges failed to fully appreciate the brilliance of our plan, and selected one that shared a few of our concepts.

  Aug 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been retained by CAS Riegler Companies to design the renovation of, and addition to 1215 N Street, NW located in the Logan Circle historic district. CAS Riegler intends to preserve and maintain the existing 4-unit residential building and to construct a new 4-unit addition for a total of eight units. Renovations to the existing building include: the reconfiguration of the existing central stair, replacement of existing unit kitchens, replacement of existing unit bathrooms and the addition of a mezzanine level and roof deck. The design of the addition will create a central court to provide light and air to unit interiors, and will include a modern rear façade providing dramatic views. The project has received unanimous approval from the DC Historic Preservation Review Board.

  Jul 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been retained by Urban Investment Partners to design Level 2 renovations for 3800 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, a 52-unit, 5-story plus basement building, and 811 Quincy Street, NW, a 47-unit, 4-story + basement building. UIP intends to preserve and maintain the existing historic character of the buildings. Renovations include: replacement of existing unit kitchens, refinishing of existing unit bathrooms, improvements to the interior of existing demised units to include modern features, and the selection and detailing of common area and unit finishes and fixtures. Exterior windows and doors will be replaced, and additional units will be placed in the basement.

  Jul 2010 Victoria Kulbick has joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Staff Architect. Upon receiving her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Catholic University in 2008, Victoria went on to receive her Masters in Architecture from Miami University of Ohio in May 2010. She interned with Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS during the summer of 2008. Her graduate thesis, "Tapitecture: Sound as a Foreground Element of Design", explores how the design of space is perceived and enriched through sonic devices and was accepted for publication by the International Journal of Arts & Sciences. Victoria brings with her a desire to design structures and spaces that enhance the experience of the architectural world.

  Jun 2010 William Bonstra, FAIA delivered the Keynote Address at the University of Maryland School of Architecture during their 2010 Commencement Ceremony. During the ceremony, held at the Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Dean Garth Rockcastle FAIA presented him with a certificate in 'Recognition of his Significant Contributions to the Built and Natural Environment'. Bill is a 1983 Graduate of the school and participates frequently on design juries and lectures at the school.

  Apr 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been retained by Commercial Real Estate Services to design a renovation and rehabilitation of the parish hall of John Wesley AME Zion Church on 14th Street, NW. This historic church, built in 1894 in the Romanesque style, includes a possibly earlier adjacent structure that may have been the original church but is currently being used as a parish hall. New floor area is being provided by underpinning the entire existing crawlspace in order to provide a useable cellar level. The original massive wood beam groin vaults will be uncovered and the vaulted ceiling restored. An elevator and all new HVAC will modernize the building and increase accessibility.

  Feb 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded preliminary design services for the historic St. Mark's Church Capitol Hill, including feasibility studies, programming and conceptual design services to estimate costs and to assist with fundraising for a capital campaign. St. Mark's, a historic landmark on the National Register, is studying renovation to its existing space, updating building systems, and possible expansion to accommodate its programs. Full design is anticipated to commence in late 2010.

  Feb 2010 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded a contract to implement the design of ancillary buildings at the St. Alban's School athletic fields on the historic Washington Cathedral Close. The project includes new tennis, concession, and pool pavilions as well as new press boxes, grandstand, baseball dugouts and storage facilities. The project is scheduled for construction in spring 2011.

  Feb 2010 David Haresign, AIA presented a lecture to a University of Maryland Real Estate Development Planning Policy, Practice, and Politics for Real Estate Developers course on review processes in the District of Columbia. Arguably the most regulated city in the country, DC projects are frequently subject to both Federal and local reviews from boards and agencies such as the Commission of Fine Arts, Old Georgetown Board, National Capital Planning Commission, National Park Service, DC Zoning Commission, DC Board of Zoning Adjustment, and the DC Historic Preservation Review Board.   Jan 2010 Urban Investment Partners has retained Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS to design the renovation of two historic apartment buildings at 1801 and 1811 Wyoming Avenue, NW, The 4-story Classical Revival buildings with cellars are located within the Kalorama Historic District. 42 updated apartments will be sold as condominiums. The project includes restoration of the columns and stairs at the front porticos, replacement of wood porches and windows, and complete unit reconfiguration, modernization, and systems upgrades.

  Jan 2010 The Shelton has been recognized with a Merit Award in the 2010 Design Arlington Awards Program. The Shelton, a 94 unit affordable housing project in the Nauck neighborhood in Arlington, VA, replaced an existing 28 unit apartment building. Jurors noted that the design achieved a market rate character, and exhibited a very strong smart growth development strategy. Congratulations to our client, AHC, Inc., our consultant team, and general contractor Harkins Builders.

  Jan 2010 David Haresign has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the George Washington Chapter of Lambda Alpha International, and is the chairperson of the Committee of Architecture, Planning, Landscape Architecture and Civil Engineering. Lambda Alpha, an honorary land economics society, is a catalyst for the advancement of land economics by facilitating the interaction of members who have distinguished themselves in their professions, their communities and through academic achievements. Lambda Alpha International provides an opportunity for distinguished practitioners and scholars to come together in fellowship to discuss, debate and sometimes solve dilemmas involving use of our land resources. In addition to guiding local chapter initiatives and programs, David is responsible for nominating distinguished practitioners and academics of the land design professions for membership in the Society.

  Jan 2010 Bonstra | Haresign Architects has been commissioned by Moore & Associates to modernize their investment office building at 8484 Georgia Avenue. The building, which was originally built by Moore & Associate founder, Lloyd Moore and completed in 1984, was just recently repurchased by Moore & Associates, who now intends to update the building's main entry lobby and common areas.

  Nov 2009 Bonstra | Haresign Architects has been commissioned by Curtis Properties to design an expansion and renovation of the Social Security Administration's Anacostia location. The 10,800 SF includes a new, larger waiting area, additional interviewing stations, a new training room, enlarged employee areas, and improved circulation, as well as new finishes throughout.

  Oct 2009 The renovation of historic 1730 Massachusetts Avenue, NW located in the Dupont Circle Historic District, is complete. Originally constructed in 1890, the 10,000 square foot project included a full renovation of a four-story townhouse and a two-story carriage house. Renovations included insertion of modern office and support functions within the historic fabric, with reception spaces, conference rooms with state-of-the-art audio visual capability, and a library/media center on the ground floor, new office configurations to accommodate workstations, a nursery, and reconfiguration of the existing kitchen to improve usability and lighting. Our clients included CCMUS, a development firm, and Flamboyan Foundation, a non profit charitable organization. Prill Construction was the general contractor.

  Oct 2009 The Woodley Wardman, a 39 unit multi-family residential project in the Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington, DC, started construction. The new residences are prominently located on Connecticut Avenue between the zoo and the Woodley Park metro stop. The project includes the renovation of 4 historic Wardman townhouses and the construction of a new seven story tower behind the retained historic structures. Murillo Mulnati is both developer and contractor. Completion is scheduled for Spring 2011.

  Oct 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded design services for the renovation of New Parkchester Housing Cooperative. Each building in the 17 building complex will be renovated to include, lobby stair halls will be renovated to provide code compliance, with an interesting stair rail design and finish materials that add personality to the previously bland and uninspiring space. Two under-used spaces are being built out into a new fitness center and business center for the community. Finally, all 128 units are being refreshed with new kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, and floor and wall finishes.

  Sept 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that the Coronado at 1840 - 1846 Vernon Street, NW has been completed, with all units sold prior to completion. Contributing buildings in the Washington Heights Historic District, a new glass bridge connects the two apartment buildings, permitting shared exit stairs and elimination of fire escapes and a new central lobby. By excavation of a courtyard and opening a lower alley level for parking, 4 additional units were also added. NoVO Development Corporation was the client, and Eichberg Construction was the general contractor.

  Sept 2009 Jeremy Arnold, AIA, LEED AP was guest lecturer at Catholic University for ARCH 601: Graduate Concentration Studio I: Real Estate Development. Jeremy presented an overview of the diverse and competing factors which architects during schematic design. Special attention was given to Washington, D.C.'s unique development challenges including historic and neighborhood reviews, zoning regulations, and regional construction practices.

Bill Bonstra, AIA, LEED AP, presented to graduate students in the University of Maryland's Real Estate Development Program. His lecture, entitled "The Design Process in an Urban Context: Washington, DC", focuses on developing effective strategies for the special approval of modern design in historic districts and with unique zoning conditions. This lecture is a compliment to an article by the same name that he authored for the Real Estate Review, a national educational journal.

  Jul 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that 3505-09 Fourteenth Street, NW (link) was the recipient of a Merit Award in AIA|DC's inaugural Washington UNBUILT Awards program, which recognizes excellence in projects that remain unbuilt. The proposed 12-unit infill project incorporates an existing Wardman rowhouse, creating a harmonizing assembly that reinterprets the existing rhythms and massing of the neighboring structures to complete the block.   Jul 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of 1466 Harvard Street, NW. This 12 unit contemporary design incorporated and re-cladding an aging, dilapidated garden style apartment building, transforming the project into a dynamic composition of duplex units. The new façade and building massing respond to its unique site by establishing a curved upper façade taking advantage of views from to the north, south, and east. Large double height glazing bring light into multi-story units utilizing sustainable finishes. The project is located blocks from the Columbia Heights metro, DCUSA, and the Tivoli Theater.

  Mar 2009 Bill Bonstra, AIA, LEED AP presented a case study of The Tapies Condominium (link) to the Historic Districts Coalition. Participating, with preservation leaders, architectural historians, and other leading design professionals, in "Contemporary & Compatible – A Symposium on Contextual Modern Design", Bill discussed the integration of this contemporary design into the Greater 16th Street Historic District. The Tapies Condominium is an award-winning 21-foot wide, 85-foot tall contemporary design, which fits comfortably within its historic context of 1920’s era buildings.

  Mar 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that the Lower Georgia Avenue Job Training Center project received unanimous approval by the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment at their February meeting. The project, located in the Petworth neighborhood, will consist of a 15,500 SF job training center above a level of underground parking for 18 cars. Other important project features include state of the art training classrooms, a community-learning center, community conference rooms and a state-of-the-art commercial training kitchen.   Mar 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS was featured in two articles in the Spring 2009 issue of Architecture DC. A feature article on Parker Flats at Gage School, titled "Old School (New Housing): Historic Building Becomes Center of Condo Complex" by Steve Dickens, AIA focuses on the historic renovation of a 1903 school building with the addition of two other buildings. In the Architecture Ahead section by Martin Moeller, the exterior addition to 1200 New Hampshire Avenue was featured. This commercial renovation project involved a BZA variance for additional F.A.R. and open space modification, and includes a one-level addition that will bring retail spaces to the street and a green roof.

  Mar 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce our firm’s work showcased in The University of Maryland, School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation exhibition: SUBSEQUENT ACTION: Creative Work on Neglected Ground, curated by Dean Garth Rockcastle. Focusing on adaptive reuse projects in urban contexts, the exhibit includes three of the firm’s national award-winning projects. The lobby and common areas in this "Class A" office space were transformed the space through judicious additions of wood paneling, back lighted glass, seating areas, reception desk, carpet inserts, railing replacement and selective lighting enhancements and accessories.   Jan 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of CITTA 50 condominiums at 1450 Church Street, NW, a 27-unit condominium complex in the Greater 14th Street Historic District. CITTA 50, which includes a restored historic building designed by prominent African American architect John Lankford, is articulated as a series of compatible yet distinct volumes appearing to be built over time. Designed to respect the varied rhythm of the surrounding industrial era streetscape, the building allows for maximum views and open spaces on its north, south, and west exposures. At the roof, a penthouse sheathed in backlit blue polycarbonate panels will reinforce the buildings unique identity within the city.

  Jan 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of The Shelton, an affordable housing project in Arlington, VA. Working with our client, AHC, Inc., The Shelton, a 98 unit, 103,000 square foot affordable multi-family complex is part of the Nauck Village Center Action Plan for the revitalization of a depressed neighborhood area in Arlington. The project includes a retail component on the southeast corner of the site, as well as 108 underground parking spaces.

  Jan 2009 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of Ontario Court. A complete renovation of this historic building, known as the site for President Jimmy Carter’s 1970’s announcement of his affordable housing initiatives, Ontario Court features 27 fully renovated and newly configured 1, 2, and 3-bedroom affordable apartments. It includes a terraced landscaped courtyard and new building systems. A 24-hour state-of-the-art childcare facility – JumpStart, separate from the residences above, is located within the expanded lower level.

  Jan 2009 Members of the Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS staff toured the National Building Museums Green Community exhibit with curator Susan Piedmont Palladino. The exhibit focuses on the origins of our ecological situation and introduces communities large and small where citizens, planning and design professionals, developers, and government agencies are working together for a more sustainable future.   Dec 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that two of our projects were cited in the 2008/2009 Washington DC Economic Partnership Development Report. Benning Station was featured in the office development section. Benning Station will contain 180,000 square feet of commercial office space, retail, and 3 levels of underground parking. The project anticipates achieving LEED Silver certification through a variety of site development and environmentally friendly building systems. It is slated for completion in 2010. Parker Flats at Gage School was featured in the residential development section. Parker Flats at Gage School is a historic adaptive reuse project, converting a 1904 Gage School with the addition of two new residential buildings. The project, consisting of a total of 92 residential units was completed in 2008.

  Oct 2008 Bill Bonstra and David Haresign led an Urban Land Institute roundtable discussion on Urban Design: Living on the Edge. The discussion focused on development opportunities and challenges created by the revitalization of previously neglected inner urban areas. Through both private sector and public sector initiatives such as streetscape initiatives, sector plans with form based zoning, rehabilitation of existing buildings, and catalytic institutional and private investment, innovative site planning and building design that reestablish urban communities. Case studies focused on Benning Station in Washington, DC and the Nauck Village Center Plan in Arlington, VA.

  Sept 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded The Eden Condominiums project with DB Lee Development. The new 9-unit multi-family residential building, located at 2360 Champlain Street, NW in Adams Morgan, will have duplex units with internal stairs and two-story living spaces. An intensive green roof with several feet of soil depth will provide an urban garden with views of DC's monuments. The facades will use a combination of masonry and metal panels scaled to relate to the nearby urban fabric while being a prominent addition to the evolving Champlain street neighborhood.

  Sept 2008 David Haresign and Jeremy Arnold from Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS gave a presentation to graduate students pursuing a Masters in Real Estate Development at the University of Maryland. Part of the Capstone Program at UMCP, this class investigates the potential redevelopment of an urban site in the Kalorama neighborhood. Their adviser, developer David Roodberg of Horning Brothers, invited Bonstra | Haresign to speak as an expert in the design of infill urban residential buildings and to introduce our design methods and process.

  Sept 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that three of our projects have been recognized in the 2008 AIA Potomac Valley Chapter Design Awards. The Tapies Condominium and 701 Lamont Lofts, both located in Washington, DC, received Merit Awards and Pershing Court Office Condominiums, located in Silver Spring, MD, received a Citation Award. CRES and Neighborhood Development Company developed The Tapies Condominium and 701 Lamont Lofts, respectively. Broad Street Ventures, LLC, developed Pershing Court Office Condominiums.

Hello Cupcake, located in Dupont Circle, is a 1,000 square foot retail and kitchen renovation including custom marble countertops topping an expanse of molded pattered gypsum panels for the counter area.   August 2008 624 8th Street, NE, a luxury six-unit condominium for Capitol Hill LLC, has broken ground in Capitol Hill. Special features include 2,200 square foot three bedroom duplex units, multi-story interior spaces, rooftop gardens with views of the Capitol dome, maximum glazing with exterior sunshading, an underfloor radiant HVAC system, and insulated concrete wall and floor systems. Financed by Sovereign Bank, the project will be constructed by Schaefer Construction Management, Inc. with completion in December 2009.

  August 2008 Marek Hnizda joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Staff Architect. Earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture during his studies at the University of Maryland, Marek focuses on holistic design as the driving force towards a multitude of interdisciplinary theoretical and directly proposed investigations. Marek's work embraces the dichotomy of build-ability and aesthetics, a result of his multicultural background rooted in the Design-Build environment with a focus on attention to detail.

  August 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Parker Flats at Gage School has been selected for a citation award in the multi-family residential category in the Maryland Chapter of the AIA 2008 Design Awards and the only project awarded in the category. The jury states, "the restraint taken with restoring the building to its original quality, revealing the interior brick construction and the careful restoration of the façade had us (the jury) most impressed." Parker Flats at Gage School completed in January 2008 is a historic preservation project that was transformed into a 92-unit condominium complex in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, DC.

  August 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Ontario Court is currently under construction and is 1/3 complete. In addition to restoration of the building’s existing mid-century brick facades, Ontario Court features 27 newly configured 1-, 2-, and 3-BR affordable apartments around four walk-up courtyard entrances, new landscaping and systems, and a new 24-hour state-of-the-art childcare facility – JumpStart – on the enlarged lower level. Proposed completion date is February 2009. Ontario Court will be developed by Jubilee Housing and constructed by Ellis Denning Construction.

  July 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded design for The Lower Georgia Avenue Job Training Center in the Petworth neighborhood of Washington, DC. The 3-story, 24,000 GSF facility will house 6 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, computer rooms, a resource library, and community meeting rooms. Additionally, the non-profit organization that runs the program, called the Jobs Partnership of Greater Washington DC, will have office space on the second floor. The building will feature a green roof and sustainable landscaping as the design team is attempting to get LEED Silver certification for the center.

  July 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that the 617 Jefferson Street, NW project has been completed. This 12-unit multi-family residential renovation project included interior improvements to the common areas, and the units have been renovated to have a more updated feel. 617 Jefferson Street, NW was developed my John C. Formant Real Estate and was constructed by Kalivas Contractors.

  July 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that 1200 New Hampshire Avenue has received approvals from the Board of Zoning Appeals for FAR increase and relief from open space requirement, and ANC 2A approval. A single story, double height volume glass-faced triangular addition will infill the plaza and provide neighborhood retail that engages the street. The green roof of the addition will slow storm water run-off and provide an enhanced view for upper floor tenants. Client DCD America, Inc. has also engaged Bonstra | Hasresign ARCHITECTS to redesign the lobby.

  July 2008 The Jordan, a 97,000 square foot affordable housing complex in Arlington, Virginia has received the Final 4.1 Site Plan Submission and Major Site Plan Amendment from Arlington County. A 90 unit J-shaped plan, contracted with AHC, Inc, faces three streets and a pedestrian path divides the site from the office building to the east. The residences surround a landscaped courtyard allowing for private outdoor recreation. The Jordan is slated for construction in 2009. The Jordan is a component of the JBG Company’s Peck Site redevelopment at Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard in Ballston, and is being developed by AHC, Inc.

  July 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS was featured in the July 2008 issue DC Modern Luxury in an article titled "Glass Warfare" by Tiffany Jow. This feature discussing the use of suspended glass plates on the facades of modern buildings called for Bill Bonstra’s opinion on this trend.   June 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of The Viya, a 30,000 square foot, 16 unit multi-family residential complex located on Ontario Road in Northwest DC. The structure is compromised of three floors with a mezzanine level. The design of 2426 Ontario Road reflects the image of two townhouses broken up with the massing of the facade. This "S" shaped design allows natural light to pass through each unit on at least two sides. Other elements of the design include a central courtyard, and above grade parking, and private roof decks. The Viya was developed and constructed by Adams Investment.

  June 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Parker Flats at Gage School was featured in the June 2008 issue of Washingtonian where the jury praised the light touch of the design, the new dormers, and the unobtrusive placement of mechanical and electrical gear. "Schools are the connective tissue of a community," a judge noted, "and this one signals new life in the neighborhood." The project was also featured in the Summer 2008 issue of Architecture DC. "The architect walks away from the project without leaving fingerprints all over it; the building looks like it’s always been there," said one juror with approval. Parker Flats at Gage School was developed by Urban Realty Advisors and constructed by James G. Davis Construction Corporation.

  June 2008 Sarah Carrier joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Staff Architect. Having just earned her Masters in Architecture and Masters in Urban Design at Washington University in St Louis, Sarah brings years of study and training in the fields of design, planning, graphics, rendering, and construction to the firm. After graduating from The Catholic University of America she went to St Louis to gain a broader educational experience and improve her knowledge in the field of architecture and design.

  June 2008 Jeremy Arnold, AIA has joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Project Architect. His experience includes additions and renovations to historic buildings in the DC area, including the Avalon Theater, and local, award-winning commercial, restaurant, and residential projects. Since receiving his Master of Architecture from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2000, he has remained an active part of the Maryland Architecture Alumni Chapter.

  June 2008 David Haresign, AIA participated in the Urban Land Institute’s Multifamily Trends Conference in San Francisco, CA. The conference is focused on the trends and issues affecting and transforming multifamily for-rent and for-sale housing. The faculty represents leading practitioners and experts in the areas of design, finance, marketing and management. David is a member of the Urban Land Institute along with staff members Tom Wallinga, AIA and Joseph Corridore.

  May 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Pershing Court has won an excellence award for Best Suburban Renovation in the 2008 NAIOP Maryland/DC Chapter Awards. Pershing Court, located in the heart of the transformation of downtown Silver Spring, MD has been converted from two freestanding 1960’s era office buildings into a single, 30,000 square foot office condominium building. The old medical office buildings are now joined together with a new entrance courtyard leading to a glass lobby and walkway addition. Pershing Court was developed by Broad Street Ventures, LLC and constructed by Eichberg Construction.

  May 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded a renovation project 1433 T Street, NW. The existing apartment building, located in the Greater U Street Historic District, will be reconfigured and expanded from 31 apartments to a total of 37 apartments. Two additions to the existing courtyards, and one rooftop loft addition at the rear of the building will maximize the site and enhance the layouts of the apartments. The complete renovation will include all new mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems, new interior finishes, an additional egress stair and a comprehensive sprinkler system. The renovation, administered by the owner Perseus Realty, is scheduled to begin in October of 2008.

  May 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been awarded an interior renovation project at the Carriage House Condominiums located at 2201 New Hampshire Avenue, NW. The existing building is a 9-story, 170-unit residential condominium building located in the West End neighborhood. This project consists of upgrading of the building’s public areas including: the main entry and car drop-off, main lobby with new concierge desk with employee bathroom and office, public corridors and unit entrance doors, and egress stairs and rear loading dock. The design achieves a refined and sophisticated aesthetic to improve the physical environment of the existing building.

  May 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Parker Flats at Gage School has won an Award of Excellence in Historic Preservation in the 2008 AIA Northern Virginia Chapter design awards competition. Developed by Urban Realty Advisors and constructed by James G. Davis Construction Corporation, Parker Flats at Gage School completed in January 2008 is a historic preservation project that was transformed into a 92-unit condominium complex in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, DC. Jurors noted "This is a miraculous save of a bombed-out building shell with good bones." They admired the contrast between the old existing and the new more Modern details. "A notably liberal preservation ... truly adaptive reuse," they remarked.

  Apr 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that construction has begun on 2300 M Street, NW. A "Class A" office property with prestigious tenants including the European Union and small law firms is undergoing a full lobby and common area renovation. The original lobby’s extensive stone flooring, walls and drywall give an austere almost sterile impression. A surgical renovation transforms the space with additions of wood paneling, back lighted glass, seating areas, reception desk, carpet inserts, railing replacement and selective lighting enhancements and accessories. 2300 M Street, NW is slated for completion in Fall 2008.

  Apr 2008 David Haresign, AIA, John Edwards, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP and Tom Wallinga, AIA presented an in-office lecture and tour to the Spring 2008 graduate section of the Catholic University of America’s Professional Practice course Project Management. David, John and Tom gave insights into professional practice organization and project management, with tips on what architecture firms look for when hiring new graduates. Thirty-five students from CUA attended the lecture, participated in Q&A and toured the B|HA offices.

  Mar 2008 Bill Bonstra, AIA, LEED AP and Chuck Witmer of Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS led a Construction Watch Tour of Citta 50 for the National Building Museum. Citta 50 (Church Street Condominiums) is a 27-unit condominium building that incorporates an existing historic structure. This building combines the renovation of an existing, historically significant structure, built by the prominent 1940's Washington D.C. architect John A. Lankford, with a new 7 story loft style condominium addition that features an open courtyard behind a steel and wood entry gate.

  Mar 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that John Edwards, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, has been selected by the national AIA to participate in National Architectural Accrediting Board evaluations of colleges and universities undergoing initial or reaccredidation of their architecture programs. A team with representatives from AIA, ACSA, NCARB, and AIAS evaluate the school's professional program against a set of performance-based criteria and recommend a specific term of accreditation based on that evaluation. Together with the periodic review/revision of the accreditation conditions and criteria by the five organizations, participation in accreditation team visits is the primary vehicle through which the profession can ensure that graduates from individual programs receive a common performance-based standard of academic education enabling them to perform in the professional environment and qualify for eventual licensure.

An article titled "Living Large" by Tiffany Jow, portrays the trend of DC modernists heading toward the large and luxurious in their homes. Out of 120 projects entered into the competition, Parker Flats at Gage School is one of 40 finalists.   Mar 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that 701 Lamont Lofts has been selected for an award in the 2008 residential architect design awards competition. 701 Lamont Lofts was selected for a Merit award in the adaptive reuse category as one of 36 winners out of 1,300 projects entered nationwide. 701 Lamont Lofts, a converted laundry plant from the 1950's is now a 38-unit luxury condominium building with exposed interior brick, rooftop terraces, duplex lofts, and the design breathes new life back into this abandoned warehouse facility. Congratulations to our developer, Neighborhood Development Company and our contractor, NDC Builders for their great efforts.

  Mar 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that AHC's Jordan Manor, a 90 unit affordable housing project in Arlington, VA, received unanimous approval from the Arlington County Board of Supervisors as part of a mixed-use project at the Peck Site. The 4.1 Site Plan design process and Submission was begun by Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS in late October 2007.

  Mar 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of the Customer Service Center for SI-International. Located in SI Headquarters in Reston, Virginia, the 7,200 square foot facility houses a flexible demonstration lab and conference/sales center, support offices, server and I.T rooms, and a hybrid space of kitchen/dining space for conference breakout and informal demonstrations. Construction management services were provided by JLL.

  Feb 2008 Thomas Wallinga, AIA has joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Project Manager/Senior Project Architect. He brings over 20 years experience to our firm and has worked on various project types including residential, senior living, and higher education buildings. His work can be found locally in Washington, DC, as well as, Florida, Boston and other New England areas. After graduating from the Iowa State University College of Design he moved to the east coast practicing in Boston, New Hampshire and Washington, DC. In addition to project responsibilities, Thomas will assist firm leadership with technical excellence and mentoring staff. Thomas is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Urban Land Institute.

  Feb 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by the Jobs Partnership of Greater Washington and the Neighborhood Development Company to develop the Lower Georgia Avenue Job Training Center. This mixed-use/institutional project will be located in Washington, DC and will include a job training center with provided housing, as well as, a day care component.

The workshop brought together people from many diverse professional backgrounds to learn the facts behind going green in your business and practical ways to use your firm's resources more efficiently.   Feb 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been acknowledged for their work with AHC, Inc. in the Winter 2008 issue of American Builder's Quarterly. A featured article titled, "Tax Credits and Government Financing are Keys to Expansion", by Rick Silverman, discuses AHC, Inc and their affordable housing efforts. Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is currently developing three affordable housing projects with AHC, Inc. The Shelton, a 94-unit project that has a market rate feel, Nauck Macedonia, a 35-unit project with AHC and Macedonia Baptist Church, and Jordan Manor, a 90-unit project with 80% multi-bedroom apartments in the Peck site redevelopment. All three projects are designed to meet VHDA standards and include sustainable design features. Nauck Macedonia and Jordan will be EarthCraft Certified.

  Feb 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been featured in the DC Urban Metro Diary in an article titled 'Logan Circle Condo Sale Begins Today'. Written by David Loebsack, from DC Real Estate, features the Church Street Condominiums (Citta 50). The project, described by Bill Bonstra as, "a surprisingly contemporary building incorporating a retained historic structure." This 27-unit building is 50% completed and developer Andrew Economakis expects completion at the end of 2008.

  Feb 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by DCD America, Inc. for a renovation and addition project located 1200 New Hampshire Ave, NW, Washington, DC. The project will provide additional rentable floor area by enclosing ground floor arcades and 2nd floor balconies, and brings retail to the face of the sidewalk. A new signature glass retail pavilion and renovated lobby space will elevate the building from b- to a-/b+ character.

  Jan 2008 Anna Ward, LEED AP, Evan Hathaway and Jay Sikes, LEED AP are participating in the Washington Architectural Foundation's Architecture in the Schools Program. Architecture in the Schools (AIS) matches volunteer architects with public school teachers to enrich the learning experience of children. This program allows children exercise their analytical and creative skills through the architectural design process. Throughout the spring semester, this team of highly intellectual and patient intern architects has taught a weekly class of first graders at Brightwood Elementary School in Washington, DC. The topics of discussion and activity have ranged from structure, materials and building types to the monuments of Washington, DC. With a focus of "the community around us" the first graders have begun to see the neighborhood around them in a new way. The final presentation of the semester's work will be displayed at the John A.   Jan 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Urban Investment Partners to design three residential renovation projects in Washington, DC. The projects included are: 1706 T Street, NW, a four story plus basement, 23-unit apartment building in the Strivers Section Historic District; 1921 Kalorama Road, NW; a six story plus basement, 61-unit apartment building in the Kalorama Triangle Historic District; and 1604 Q Street, NW, a 46-unit five story apartment building plus basement in the Dupont Circle Historic District. Interiors will feature updated interior design with modern open plans and unique built-in wall dividers, sliding walls and storage niches.

  Jan 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Urban Investment Partners to design a renovation and additions to the Macklin, a historically significant mixed use building in the Cleveland Park Historic District. The complex of buildings, designed by Mihran Misrobian in 1939, is a seminal park + shop facility at the corner of Newark Street and Connecticut Avenue. This project will include a renovation and addition to the original Macklin Site, including the existing mixed-use building with 17 apartment units and ground floor retail, 18 proposed condominium units, 3,000 square feet of additional retail space and below grade parking.

  Jan 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Potomac Group Development, LLC to design a multifamily residential project located at 5233 Connecticut Avenue. This project is currently an existing single-family residence that will be converted to a six-unit condominium complex. The work will maintain the existing street front facade while expanding the building with an addition to the rear and a mezzanine level to the top of the building.

  Jan 2008 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Stavins & Axelrod to design a mixed-use building in the H street northeast overlay district. The site is located at a unique and prominent intersection of six major roads. The resulting triangular site, with street frontage on H Street, Florida Avenue, and 14th Street, will be designed to act as a gateway for the H street corridor. The program will consist of 35-40 residential units, ground floor retail and below grade parking. The project will undergo a public space acquisition phase to allow for a larger site to help adjust to the irregular site conditions.

  Dec 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that the Herman Residence is featured in January 2008 issue of the Washingtonian magazine. Potomac Payoff, written by Michael Tardif, discusses a cost effective design to expand an ordinary 1950's rambler into a modern, open plan with private zoning for Bill, Ellen and daughter Chloe, and separate guest and nanny suites. The brick, stone and shingle exterior recall Bill and Ellen's childhood homes. The renovated house is larger than a new house the Hermans considered building, but at half the cost.

  Nov 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Lamont Lofts at 701 Lamont Street, NW AOL Creative Center 1 in Dulles, VA are featured in the November/December 2007 issue of URBAN LAND magazine. LANDWRITES: Doing Adaptive Use, by Mary Konsoulis, focuses on the economic advantages, limitations, risks and incentives for adapting existing buildings for new uses. Lamont Lofts converts a rare DC industrial building into a 38 unit condominium in the emerging Petworth neighborhood. Lamont Lofts was developed by Neighborhood Development Corporation. AOL CC1 converted a non-descript 120,000 SF high bay warehouse into a state-of-the-art corporate office building for America Online. By reusing existing structure and zoning envelopes, both projects delivered unique space at reasonable construction costs, reduced construction waste by retaining existing structures, and delivered in quicker timeframes.

  Nov 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of the Palermo Condominium at 442 M Street NW. This historic 1890 rowhome and carriage house in the heart of the Mount Vernon Square Historic District has been renovated into seven luxury condominium units. Ranging in size from four one-bedroom/one-bath units to two two-bedroom/two-bath units to one rooftop three bedroom/three-bath penthouse, the condominiums feature such amenities as private rear gardens, new upper-level terraces, high-end appliances and fixtures, and off-street parking. In addition to repair and/or replacement of historic windows and exterior details throughout, the upper floors of the main house have been expanded in the rear and a new glass and aluminum garden façade has been added to the rear carriage house. The Palermo was developed by the Murillo/Malnati Group and constructed by MMG's affiliate Renovations Unlimited.

  Nov 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Joe Svatos, an Akridge Real Estate Services executive, to assist with the design of a Shenandoah River cabin in Rappahannock County, VA. The project includes documenting existing conditions, siting a relocated 1795 chestnut log cabin adjacent to an existing 1790 log cabin and its modern 1850's addition, assisting with design of the restoration of the historic buildings, designing a modern interior insertion into the historic fabric, and attaching a modern viewing deck overlooking the river bed and with views to Old Rag Mountain.

  Nov 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the grand opening of the Cathy Pfeiffer Library at Watkins Elementary School, part of the Capitol Hill Community Foundation's School Libraries Project. One of eight DC public school libraries to be completely recreated through the pro-bono services of local architects, the Watkins renovation doubled the size of the existing school library to create a highly functional space serving children from pre-K to 4th grade. Featuring new furniture, computers, finishes and story time amphitheater (in addition to an enlarged collection), the new library spans the width of the school and cleverly incorporates an existing fire corridor to unite rather than divide the newly opened space. The library renovation was managed pro-bono by Regan Associates and was funded through a combination of private donations, DCPS and Federal funding.

  Nov 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by AHC, Inc. to design Jordan Manor in Arlington, VA. Jordan Manor will provide 90 affordable residential units adjacent to a commercial development in Ballston at the intersection of Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard. The project is being constructed on top of a parking podium constructed by the JBG, the primary developer, and will replace 40 existing units of affordable housing. Jordan Manor is being fast tracked through the 4.1.1 Site Plan Review process in Arlington. Jordan Manor will be an EarthCraft certified sustainable designed project.

  Oct 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS sponsored The Greening of Arlington, a presentation of Green Initiatives by Leadership Arlington. The event focused on Arlington, VA's sustainable design initiatives and programs, and included a panel discussion and a tour of the new Walter Reed Community Center, one of Arlington's "Green" buildings. Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is currently designing three affordable housing projects in Arlington - the Shelton which is under construction, and Nauck Macedonia and Jordan Manor in Ballston. Macedonia and Jordan Manor will both be Earthcraft certified sustainable designed buildings.

  Oct 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that The Boyd Condominium at 1212 M Street, NW, was featured in the Late Fall 2007 issue of Home & Design Magazine. The article written by Sally Kline is entitled, House of Glass: A Thoroughly Modern Penthouse Reflects Its Historic Surroundings, with photography by Kenneth M. Wyner. The project, a unique modern penthouse built on top of an existing 1940's apartment building is described as "the addition set atop the existing building like a jewelry box on top of a dresser".

  Oct 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received approval from the Historic Preservation Review Board for the exterior renovation and addition to contributing buildings located at 1840 and 1846 Vernon Street, NW in the Washington Heights Historic District. In addition to restoration of the 1910 apartment buildings, a modern glass and metal bridge connects the buildings, providing a primary point of access and a modern link between fire stairs. Interiors will be gutted and reconfigured with modern amenities and unit layouts. The staff report from the Historic Preservation Office cited "the application as a good solution to adapt historic buildings to current use and bringing them into compliance with today's building codes. The bridge addition is clearly distinct in its design and cannot be interpreted as an original feature of the architecture. Yet, it is also compatible, looking to the original architecture for scale and balance. Similarly, the sidelights at the entry align with the brick coursing on the apartment buildings, translating this historic design feature onto the addition simply and elegantly." The project is being developed by NOVO Development and constructed by Eichberg Construction, with an expected start of demolition in December 2007.

David was inducted into the Society at its annual Investiture Ceremony at the historic Decatur House in downtown Washington, DC, with remarks by Society president Louis Slade. Lambda Alpha provides a forum for the study and advancement of land economics. Lambda Alpha International provides an opportunity for distinguished practitioners and scholars to discuss and debate dilemmas involving use of our land resources, and to act as a catalyst for the advancement of land economics.

  Oct 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Bill Bonstra, AIA, LEED AP has been selected to be on the Zoning Review Taskforce for the District of Columbia. The Taskforce will participate in an advisory role to the Office of Planning on the first significant review and update of the District's zoning code in 50 years. Bill was appointed by Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans based on Bill's significant architectural contributions to Ward 2 and his working knowledge of the DC Zoning code. Bill was Past Chair of the Logan Circle Community Association's Design Review Committee and has been an expert witness in testimony in over 10 significant zoning cases, including successful recent BZA cases for 1446-54 Church Street, NW, Q14 Condominium, The Studio Theatre, The Ivy, and to the Zoning Commission for a Planned Unit Development (PUD) at 1600 North Capitol Street, NW.

  Oct 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Q14 and The Studio Theatre received 2007 Honor Awards for design excellence from the Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The Studio Theatre received an Honor Award in the Institutional category, and Q14 Condominium received an Honor Award in the Multi-Family Residential category. Studio Theatre's $11 million renovation and expansion, a catalyst for the emerging 14th Street corridor, include the addition of two new theaters, a new entry lobby, renovation of the existing theater building, box office, classroom space, and the insertion of a glass atrium onto the existing historic show rooms. Q14, completed in 2007, is a new 28-unit luxury condominium building with ground floor retail and two levels of underground parking. The buildings massing, rhythm of projecting bays, and exuberant brick detailing integrates both the commercial and residential characteristics into the dual street exposures.   Oct 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS hosted 10 Catholic University undergraduate students from Associate Dean and Professor Eric Jenkins' ARCH 216 sketching class. Bill Bonstra, AIA, LEED AP along with staff architects and CUA grads Jack Devilbiss and Evan Hathaway discussed the importance of freehand sketching in the design process, utilizing examples of design sketches used for the development of the firm's work.

  Sep 2007 Bill Bonstra, AIA, LEED AP presented a lecture, Contemporary Infill Design in an Urban Context, to Catholic University graduate architecture students. Bill presented several of the firm's projects including: Tapies , Q14 Condominium, Lofts at 2424, Parker Flats at Gage School, and Villaggio. The discussion demonstrated the importance of visual analysis of the existing context in the design of contemporary architecture in an urban context.

  Sep 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by J Street Development and NorthStar Development and Consulting to design a master plan and commercial components for the Bethlehem Baptist Church site at Martin Luther King Avenue and Howard Road, SE. The mixed use project includes a replacement 750 seat sanctuary and support space, a community center, 500,000 square feet of office and retail space, 180 units of affordable housing, and structured parking for 700 cars.

  Sep 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received approval from the Historic Preservation Review Board for the exterior renovation of the contributing building located at 2208 14th Street, NW in the Greater U Street Historic District. This existing, two-story "shell" building will be completely renovated into a three level commercial structure, of future restaurant use. The design is intended to be sensitive to the historic context through the thoughtful insertion of contemporary interventions within the façade, which retains existing restored contributing historical elements. By creating this dialogue, the design shall be respectful of its historic nature and surroundings while simultaneously being of the time. The project is being developed and constructed by Beni, LLC, with an expected start of demolition in January 2008.

  Sep 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of the Pershing Court Office Condominium. Located in the heart of the transformation of downtown Silver Spring, two 1960 vintage medical office buildings haves been converted into a single 34,000 square foot office condominium building. A new entrance courtyard leads a glass lobby + walkway addition with a new elevator and single set of core components. A modern composition of architectural metal and glass bays with entrance canopies redefines the old buildings. Complete window replacement along with metal spandrel paneling, cornices a masonry base, and exterior paint unify the two previously mismatched buildings. Pershing Court was developed by Broad Street Ventures and constructed by Eichberg Construction.

  Jul 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of SI-International's US Patent and Trademark Office facility in Harrisonburg, VA. The 45,000 square foot facility electronically processes patent applications. An existing office building was retrofit in three phases to accommodate approximately 200 employees. In addition to the general office space, other facilities include training rooms, executive office space, an employee break room, and a data center. The existing building systems were augmented to accommodate high-density seating and back-up systems for the data center. Jones Lang LaSalle provided brokerage and project management services, with build out by Rhodenizer Construction.

  Jul 2007 Anna Ward has joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Staff Architect. Anna graduated in 2006 from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, where she concentrated in urban design, sacred design, and photography. Anna has 1 year of experience in design through construction of projects in both rural and urban settings. Anna is a LEED Accredited Professional.

  Jun 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Lowe Enterprises to assist with site evaluation and acquisition of Riverdale Corner, a mixed-use project in Riverdale, MD. Located adjacent to the MARC station, the two phase project will include up to 16,000 square feet of retail space, 190 condominium residential units, and parking for 230 cars.

  Jun 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that The Beswick River House is the feature cover story in the Summer 2007 edition of Waterfront Home & Design magazine. Prominently located at the confluence of the Rappahanock and Corrotoman Rivers on Virginia's Northern neck, the shingle style residence is the first phase of a retirement home for Barry (a CapOne executive) and artist Mary Jo Beswick. Designed to fit comfortably into low scale surroundings, the house and tower command a five-mile towards the Chesapeake Bay. Construction starts on the main house in 2008.

Smith Commercial Realty to assist with selection of major artwork for an exterior fountain and for the lobby area at Universal North, 1875 Connecticut Avenue, NW. The new pieces will replace works by David Smith and Alexander Calder. In addition, Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS will design complementary architectural improvements, including lighting and selective details of the existing lobby space. Jean Efron Art Consultants and D.Gilmore Lighting Design are consulting.

  May 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that The Tapies Condominium has received an Award for Distinctive Residential Design in the 2007 Washingtonian Residential Design Awards. This annual award program, sponsored by Washingtonian Magazine and the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, recognizes excellence in residential design in the Washington DC area. This contemporary multi-family residential project, is prominently located at 1612 16th Street, NW, within the Sixteenth Street Historic District. The client is Furioso Development. Tapies will be featured in the June issue of Washingtonian Magazine.

  May 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by NOVO Development Corporation to design a renovation at 1840-1846 Vernon Street, NW. Located within the Washington Heights Historic District and a non-conforming structure, the project is subject to review by the Historic Preservation Review Board and Board of Zoning Appeal. The project will include 30 market rate condominium units, a full restoration of the building exterior, plus parking for eight cars.

  May 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has received approval from the Historic Preservation Office for the exterior renovation of a new D.C. Historic Landmark building in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The former Danzansky Funeral Home at 3501 14th Street, NW was recognized by the DC Historic Preservation review board at their May meeting for important cultural significance as a Jewish funeral home in Washington D.C. during the 1940's, 50's and 60's. Bonstra Haresign also completed the design for the interior renovation and use of the building for the offices of the owner, Ayala & Associates.

  May 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by SI International to design its Customer Service Center at their headquarters building in Reston, VA. The 7,000 square foot facility includes marketing demonstration areas with sophisticated Audio Visual capability for customer software and hardware applications, conferencing, a customer lounge, a data center and technology support areas. Construction will be completed by December 2008, with Jones Lang Lasalle Construction Services providing preconstruction pricing and acting as the general contractor.

  May 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of 2100 M Street Fitness Center. The 3,600 square foot Fitness Center features strength training, cardio equipment, an aerobics area, and men's and women's locker rooms. The project was designed and constructed for PM Realty Group, property manager for the building, and constructed by the Keystone Group.

  Apr 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by DBT Development Group LLC to design 4414 Benning Road, NE. The mixed-use project is located adjacent and north of the Benning Road METRO Station, and includes 127,000 SF of commercial office space, 15,500 SF of street level retail space, 62,000 SF of residential space, and 140,000 SF of parking. The site presents a dynamic corner gateway to new development in the emerging neighborhood; the project will achieve LEED certification through site development and environmentally friendly building strategies and systems.

  Apr 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS assisted Hines Interests with design and zoning evaluation during their acquisition evaluation of 2100 M Street, NW. In conjunction with zoning counsel Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, B|HA demonstrated zoning opportunity and constraints to add a three story, 100,000 square foot addition to the existing eight story, 220,000 square foot office building. Hines was the successful bidder and has since acquired the building.

  Apr 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that full construction has commenced on The Shelton, a 94 unit four storey affordable multi-family housing project in the Nauck neighborhood in south Arlington, VA. A key component of the Nauck Revitalization Plan, the project will transform Shirlington Road into a pedestrian friendly main street and is located adjacent to a new town square. The U-shaped building encompasses a private landscaped courtyard with a playground. The long facades that stretch along the three primary streets mitigate their length and size with a series of repeating masonry elements at differing scales. The primary visitor entrance located along 24th Street faces the future town square. A wood and metal canopy with integrated signage defines this accessible entrance. An underground parking structure provides spaces for 105 cars. The Shelton is being developed by AHC, Inc. and constructed by Harkins Builders, with anticipated completion in December 2008.

  Apr 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Hovde Capital Advisors, LLC to design an addition to 1824-1826 Jefferson Place, NW, in the Dupont Circle Historic District. The headquarters expansion of two four-storey historic townhouses includes a 4,500 square foot addition to the rear of the existing structures, and refurbishment/reorganization of the interiors of the existing 11,000 square foot buildings.

  Apri 2007 David Haresign, AIA led a tour of Parker Flats at Gage School for University of Maryland School of Architecture graduate students, Margaret McFarland, JD, director of Real Estate Development program, and Mary Konsoulis, AICP, adjunct faculty member in Historic Preservation. The design of this 92 unit project includes restoration and adaptive reuse of the landmark Gage School, two flats apartment buildings, underground parking for 70 cars, and a green roof/landscaped plaza. The project, for Urban Realty Advisors and built by Davis Residential, is currently under construction with a projected completion in late summer 2007.

  Apr 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Macedonia Baptist Church to design Nauck Macedonia Apartments. The site is located at located at 2219, 2229 and 2237 S. Shirlington Road in Arlington, VA, across from the Shelton, a 94 unit project for AHC. The project includes a proposed 40-unit affordable housing apartment building, a small retail component or community room, and below grade structured parking. AHC, Inc. is the development manager.

  Mar 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of The Q14 Condominium at 1500 14th Street, NW. The contextual design of this 28-unit, 35,000 GSF 6-story luxury condominium and retail project integrates contemporary brick detailing and projecting glass windows and is located within the Greater 14th Street Historic District. Special features include 4 duplex units with lofts opening onto rooftop terraces with views of the surrounding neighborhood. The client is CRES, and the general contractor is Monarc Construction, Inc.

  Mar 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received approval from the Board of Zoning Appeal for 1638 14th Street, NW. The project also received DC Historic Preservation Review Board approval in November 2006. The 7-story plus cellar project includes 32 residential units, 2,500 square feet of retail, with 18 underground parking spaces. Closely matching the height of the adjacent Wardman apartments along R Street, a 5-story façade with 4-story projecting glass and metal bays recall the neighboring apartments. A projecting perforated metal cornice highlighting its primary 14th Street façade and creates an iconic image along Washington's former automotive row.

  Mar 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by 1724 Kalorama Limited Partnership to prepare a project feasibility study and concept design for 2341 Ontario Road, NW, Lot 481. An existing surface parking lot will be converted to a 4-story condominium with two levels of off-street parking. The 12 unit-building will include 1- and 2-bedroom flats with private outdoor terraces and structured parking on a steeply sloped site.

  Mar 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by the American Council on Education and Urban Realty Advisors to design a new building façade and to make improvements to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure. Facing Dupont Circle, the currently non-descript building will achieve new prominence with a complete re-facing, emphasizing each façade in a contextually responsive design. ACE intends to obtain a LEED certification for the renovated core and shell. Key team members include GHT, Ltd. for MEP engineering and GreenShape for sustainable design consulting.

  Mar 2007 David Haresign, AIA and Jennifer Marca, AIA recently led a Construction Watch Tour for The National Building Museum. David and Jennifer toured sold out sessions through the firm's Parker Flats at Gage School, a restoration and adaptive reuse of a historic landmark school building at 2nd and V Streets, NW. Parker Flats is a catalytic project currently under construction in the revitalized Bloomingdale neighborhood in Washington DC. The design of this 92-unit project includes two new condominium buildings that, in conjunction with the historic school building, frame a secure and enclosed courtyard over two levels of below grade structured parking. Bill Herman and Eric May of Urban Realty Advisors are developing the project, with Davis Construction as the General Contractor. The project will deliver in phases beginning in April 2007.

  Feb 2007 Bill Bonstra, AIA, LEED AP has been accepted as a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. The Cosmos Club is a private social club, incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1878 by men distinguished in science, literature and the arts. Since its founding, the Club has elected as members individuals in virtually every profession that has anything to do with scholarship, creative genius or intellectual distinction. Among its members, over the years, have been three Presidents, two Vice Presidents, a dozen Supreme Court justices, 32 Nobel Prize winners, 56 Pulitzer Prize winners and 45 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Bill's projects have been featured in AIA Guide to the Architecture of Washington D.C., Washington's Best Addresses, The Washington Post, Brava Casa, and other publications.

  Feb 2007 DC Modern Luxury Magazine featured Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS project The Ivy in the February issue. "The Radar Realty" article, by Drew Armstrong, focuses on trends in healthy living and amenities in the Washington area. The Ivy features a variety of sustainable design features, including low flow fixtures and an intensive green roof on a courtyard over structured parking.   Feb 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Crosstown Properties to provide design services to their 9341 Georgia Avenue site. Bonstra | Haresign will provide services to the 3-story masonry building with individual retail spaces at the lower 2 levels, with the client's intent to market the entire building for commercial uses and renovate the 3rd floor for single tenant general office use.

  Jan 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received approval from the Board of Zoning Appeal for the Woodley Wardman at 2816-2822 Connecticut Avenue, NW. The project also received DC Historic Preservation Review Board approval in September 2006. The 39-unit project includes the restoration of 4 historic Wardman townhouses and a new seven story tower with 22 underground and surface parking spaces. The new building, massed sympathetically to the existing structures, encloses a landscaped inner courtyard. Murillo | Malnati Group is developing the project, and acting as the general contractor for the restoration of the historic townhouses.

Evan recently graduated from the Catholic University of American in Washington DC with a Masters of Architecture degree, where he concentrated in cultural and sacred studies. Evan has 1 year of experience in the design and implementation of academic facilities and currently assists at Gallaudet University toward the advancement of visu-centric design and contemporary architectural space for the Deaf.   Jan 2007 AHC, Inc. has begun demolition of the Fairview Manor apartments to make way for The Shelton, a 94-unit affordable housing project. The new four storybuilding will front the Town Square in the re-emerging Nauck neighborhood in Arlington, VA. Bonstra|Haresign ARCHITECTS designed the four story building with a variety of components to break down the scale, establish a street rhythm and to fit into the residential neighborhood as outlined in Arlington's Nauck Village Plan. Harkins Builders will be the general contractor.

  Nov 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received approval from the Zoning Commission for a Planned Unit Development at 1600 North Capitol Street, NW. The site, located at the intersection of Florida Avenue and North Capitol Streets, is formerly the location of Truxton Circle and an original major crossing of the L'Enfant Plan. Dynamic building massing, with stepped planes, double bays, and tripartite division, weave horizontal elements that tie back to differing building scales on both North Capitol and Florida Avenue. With a rich palette of contemporary materials including brick, aluminum and glass, the building grows from the ground at the circle to meet the sky. The 7-story building includes 85 residential units (20% affordable), 5,000 square feet of retail, and 84 below grade parking spaces on 2 levels. Sustainable aspects include green roof areas and the mitigation of a pre-existing brownfields site. The project is being developed by Florida and Q Street LLC.

  Nov 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received approval from the DC Historic Preservation Review Board for a mixed-use development at 1638 14th Street, NW. The new 7-story plus cellar building is being developed by Dan Scott Development, LLC and includes ground level retail, 32 dwelling units, and below grade structured parking. A dramatic metal canopy caps a symmetrical facade reminiscent of the old 14th Street Automobile Row. A step-back/reduction in building height and a series of projecting bays create an appropriate transition to the residential neighborhood along R Street. B|HA looks forward to working again with Kfoury Construction, who built Studio Theatre.

  Oct 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the October Zoning Commission approval of their PUD project in the Eckington neighborhood of the city. The 83 unit project, located at the corner of North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue, NW, is comprised of a cylindrical corner tower with a playful series of bay and façade setbacks designed to integrate it into the existing residential neighborhood. 3 levels of underground parking, loading areas, and neighborhood retail spaces line the building's Florida Avenue exposure. A rear courtyard and green roof areas provide residential recreation areas for the buildings occupants.

An existing 40,000 square foot building in Harrisonburg, VA will be modified to accept the new program.   Jul 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Jubilee Housing, Inc. and Pinnacle Development Partners to design and implement the renovation of the Ontario Court Apartments at 2482 Ontario Road, NW. The project will include the "gut renovation" and restoration of the existing 27 unit residential building and implementation of a new lower level to house Jumpstart, a pre-school program with longstanding ties to the Columbia Heights community.

  Jul 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by The Sankofa Tenants Association to design the renovation for The Cresthill at 1430 Belmont Street, NW. The project will include the "gut renovation" and restoration of the historic 47 unit building located on a prominent site overlooking the city in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. The building will satisfy the affordable housing needs of the community as it is being purchased by the existing tenants through a cooperative ownership program with the assistance of Jubilee Housing Inc.

  Jun 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of The Windsor at 1822 New Hampshire Ave., NW. The renovation of this 5-unit residence included alterations to unit layouts at each floor with all new fixtures and finishes throughout. The alterations allowed for more open living spaces with larger kitchens, and resolved circulation issues on two floors with new "walk-through" bathrooms providing access from the living space to the bedroom, utilizing obscured glass walls and doors, and stone paving. The exterior has been restored and painted. Tenacity Group developed the Windsor; Monarc Construction was the general contractor.

  Jun 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by DBT Development Group to design the renovation for The St. Denis at 1638 Kenyon Street, NW. The project will include the "gut renovation" and restoration of this 38-unit historic landmark structure located in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. As part of the restoration, the existing historic balconies lost to years of neglect will be recreated to restore the building to its original character while the interior will be completely upgraded with new finishes, kitchens and baths, as well as new egress stairs and an elevator serving all levels.

  May 2006 Office Buildings Reborn - Pershing Court Starts Construction
Construction has commenced on the transformation of two 1960's medical office buildings in downtown Silver Spring, MD, into modern office condominiums. The combined buildings will now be entered through a landscaped courtyard. Exterior design features begin with removal of dated bays and trim, and the addition of modern curtainwall and metal accents, an all glass entry lobby/connector, and an entry courtyard. In order to maximize sellable area and building efficiency, Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS connected both buildings to eliminate dual building cores and egress stairs. Pershing Court is designed for Broadstreet Ventures and is being constructed by Eichberg Construction.

The project will include the construction of new 7-unit luxury condominiums within a restored historic rowhouse and rear carriage house. The project will require historic and zoning approval due to its location within the Shaw Historic District.

  April 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by the Warrenton Group to design two upcoming projects in Washington, DC. 1547 7th Street, NW includes the restoration and addition to an historic Arts and Crafts building at the corner of 7th and Q Streets, NW, will include ground floor retail along 7th Street, and nine residential units. 808 Taylor Street, NW will include renovation and modification to a 26 unit building, located in the Petworth neighborhood.

  April 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Bozzuto Development and Spaulding & Slye Investments to design a mixed-use project at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Viers Mill Road in Wheaton, MD. The project will integrate the existing METRO Bus terminal and access to the Wheaton METRO station. The project will include approximately 150,000 square feet of office and retail space, 120 residential units, and structured parking for 420 cars.

  Mar 2006 Bill Bonstra, AIA, recently led a Construction Watch Tour for The National Building Museum. Bill took an overflow crowd through the firm's Q14 Condominium, a high-profile mixed-use project at 14th and Q Streets, NW. Q14 is currently under construction along the re-developing 14th Street Corridor in Washington DC. The design of this contemporary 28-unit project is a notable addition to the Greater Fourteenth Street Historic District. The project also includes ground level retail and two levels of below grade parking, and is being constructed by Monarc Construction for Fred Bahrami of CRES. The project will deliver in the fall of 2006.

  Feb 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is teaming with Daggett & Grigg Architects of Charlottesville to design a mixed- use building for Octagon Partners in Charlottesville, VA. The Gleason includes 65 luxury condominiums and 15,000 square feet of retail adjacent to a converted grain warehouse. Located two blocks south of the Downtown Mall and adjacent to a new 80,000 square foot fitness facility, the project will include sustainable design features such as green roof areas and sun control features while allowing for maximum daylight and views to the distant Blue Ridge Mountains. The project includes 16 duplex lofts, and two bedroom flats. The Gleason will establish a new standard for modern design within the historic fabric of a converted industrial district of the city.

  Feb 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by PM Realty Group to design a new Fitness Facility at 2100 M Street, NW. The new facility, located in the basement of an existing office building, will include cardio and resistance weight training equipment, an aerobics studio, and locker rooms.

The project includes the renovation of and addition to an existing circa 1900 retail & residential building in the heart of Anacostia's commercial sector. The project will include 12 condominium units above ground floor retail.

  Jan 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the completion of 701 Lamont Lofts at 701 Lamont Street, NW. The design of this 38 unit, 55,000 SF residential adaptive reuse of a 1950's warehouse in the Petworth neighborhood of the city included the integration of projecting bay windows and creation of exterior balconies "cut" into the facades. A new vehicular ramp at the rear of the building provides access to 2 new below-grade parking areas for up to 25 cars. A new rooftop penthouse with individual hot tubs allows roof access to top floor units. The client and general contractor for the project is The Neighborhood Development Company.

  Jan 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by Mid-Atlantic Real Estate Investments to design a mixed-use project for the Mathis Avenue Town Center in Manassas, Virginia. The 480,000 SF building sits on a prominent three-acre site in the heart of the proposed district, and includes 40,000 SF of retail, parking for 480 cars, and 210 units of rental apartments.

  Jan 2006 James Lugaila has joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a staff architect. Mr. Lugaila is a 2005 architecture graduate from the Catholic University of America with experience in urban design and sustainable architecture. His thesis project focused on the adaptive reuse of the below grade Dupont Circle Trolley line and its impact on the park above. On another note we are pleased to announce that Mr. Lugaila has received LEED certification by the USGBC. James joins our other LEED certified architects designing numerous sustainable projects throughout the area.

  Jan 2006 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received two AIA awards from the Washington DC Chapter of the AIA. The Studio Theatre, a 2005 Catalyst Award winner, "gives energy to the entire block," according to the jury. The Villaggio Condominium won a 2005 Award of Merit for Architecture. The jury noted "the strength of its plan – an entry courtyard slipped into its urban context" and how it creates "a real relationship between the building envelope and the interior spaces."

  Dec 2005 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected by the American Housing Corporation (AHC) to design a new 94 unit affordable housing project in Arlington, Virginia. The building, which also includes ground floor retail and a community room, will be the first major building in the revitalization of the historic Nauck community as envisioned by Arlington County's recently adopted Nauck Village Center Action Plan. The new building replaces an existing 28 unit garden apartment, and fronts the proposed town square for Nauck Village.

Two existing 1960's developer office buildings are joined by a new entry lobby within a courtyard, the neo-classical exterior is redefined with projecting curtainwall bays, and new systems and reorganization of common area elements are included in the renovation. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2006.

  Dec 2005 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the spring, construction start of the 1466 Harvard Street Condominium. The existing building, a bleak mid-century apartment, will be renovated and expanded to feature a glassy rooftop addition and an angled bay fronting Harvard Street. For this project Bonstra-Haresign Architects teams up with owner/architect Sydney Rasekh, AIA to explore recent innovations in green building products. The existing façade will receive a facelift, punctuated with larger windows and wrapped with a composite wood rainscreen. The final design will accommodate 12 condominium units, many duplex with focused views of the city.

  Dec 2005 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce that Parker Flats at Gage School has broken ground. The project includes the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic Gage School, and the addition of two new condominium buildings and a below grade parking structure.   Dec 2005 Bill Smith, LEED AP, has recently joined Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS as a project architect. Mr. Smith, with experience in sustainable design aspects of numerous local projects, is currently working on the renovation of The Alexander Condominium and The Meridian Condominium. The later project, a registered DC landmark built by the Henderson family during the early 1900's and occupied as the Egyptian, Nicaraguan, and Italian Embassies, is located east of Meridian Park in Columbia Heights. The project will include 14 luxury units within this restored landmark.

  Oct 2005 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS announces the anticipated November completion of The Ivy Condominium, 1464 Harvard Street, NW. The 14-unit project has been built behind a retained rowhouse façade and incorporates a landscaped courtyard, exterior balconies, underground parking, and soaring penthouse ceilings with private roof decks. This project is located within the Columbia Heights neighborhood.

  Oct 2005 John Edwards, Assoc. AIA, of Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS ,is participating in the WAF/CDC's pro bono Capitol Hill School Libraries Initiative, working with the staff and PTA at Watkins Elementary/CHC School to develop plans for a significant expansion and improvement of the school's antiquated library. With considerable support from the local community and DC schools, Watkins hopes to implement the scheme within the coming year.

  Oct 2005 Brian Forehand, Assoc. AIA, of Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS, is providing pro bono services to the Anacostia Community Boathouse Association (ACBA) for the conversion of an existing 1930's industrial building into the Anacostia Riverwalk Visitor Information Center, which will serve as a gateway to the Anacostia River and Trail. The project has just been awarded $300,000 from the Federal Aid Transportation Enhancement Program, in conjunction with the District Department of Transportation, to assist in development. The renovated facility (which most recently housed DDot's bridge maintenance operations) will include meeting areas for the community and support facilities for the adjacent boathouse.

  Jul 2005 Jennifer Marca, a project architect with Bonstra l Haresign ARCHITECTS, has recently completed her ARE and has become NCARB Certified. With Bonstra Haresign Architects, Ms. Marca has designed numerous projects including: 2424 Lofts, 2426 Ontario Road Condominiums, Harvard, Parker Flats at Gage School and The Erie Condominium.

You may know Andrew from his appearance as a designer on the Discovery Channel series "Garage Takeover".

  May 2005 Bonstra l Haresign ARCHITECTS has been selected to design 3 new duplex townhouse condominiums on Capitol Hill near Union Station. The modern design will feature 2,000 sf duplex units with soaring ceilings and balconies on each level. Sustainable design features include a green roof, an under-floor air distribution system, and exterior sunshading. Craftsmen from around the world will use rare materials to create the interior design elements of this one of a kind project.

  May 2005 John Edwards, Assoc. AIA, has joined Bonstra l Haresign ARCHITECTS as a Project Architect. With another firm, John was project architect for the joint venture including Graham Gund Associates on the design and implementation of the LEED Certified NAR Building on New Jersey Avenue, NW. John will head up the 801 Virginia Avenue, SE project, also seeking LEED Certification.
