Oct 2007 Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS received approval from the Historic Preservation Review Board for the exterior renovation and addition to contributing buildings located at 1840 and 1846 Vernon Street, NW in the Washington Heights Historic District. In addition to restoration of the 1910 apartment buildings, a modern glass and metal bridge connects the buildings, providing a primary point of access and a modern link between fire stairs. Interiors will be gutted and reconfigured with modern amenities and unit layouts. The staff report from the Historic Preservation Office cited "the application as a good solution to adapt historic buildings to current use and bringing them into compliance with today's building codes. The bridge addition is clearly distinct in its design and cannot be interpreted as an original feature of the architecture. Yet, it is also compatible, looking to the original architecture for scale and balance. Similarly, the sidelights at the entry align with the brick coursing on the apartment buildings, translating this historic design feature onto the addition simply and elegantly."
