We are thrilled to share the recent recognition of three Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS projects: CITTA 50, Hazel River Cabin and Solstice Baltimore.

The Brick Industry Association (BIA) announced that CITTA 50 is among the winners of the 2014 Brick in Architecture Awards by the Brick Institute of America, the nation’s premiere architectural award featuring clay brick. This project also received recognition in the 2012 AIA Potomac Valley Design Awards, the 2010 Washingtonian Residential Design Awards program and in national journals.

CITTA 50 is the recipient of a Bronze Award in the Renovation/Restoration category. The former coal-distribution facility, one of two remaining buildings designed by architect John A. Lankford, the first registered African American architect in Washington DC, was transformed and expanded into 27 loft-style residential units. The adaptive reuse project restores the building’s historic structure and artfully adds a complimentary addition within the Greater Fourteenth Street Historic District subject to review by the DC HPRB. The project was subject to review and approval by the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment.

Congratulations to our client, DC Hampton LLC, our talented staff and engineering consultants, our contractor, Camden Builders, and the masonry suppliers and sub-contractors.

Hazel River Cabin – Washingtonian Residential Design Awards

Hazel River Cabin is the recipient of a 2014 Washingtonian Residential Design Award. The project has been recognized with seven national, regional and local design awards, and broad publication.

A 1794 log cabin, 1856 clapboard addition and imported slave quarters were combined to create the Hazel River Cabin, a rural weekend retreat. These historic cottages retain their original character while having been renovated for contemporary life.

Juror Toshiko Mori enthusiastically remarked, “Dealing with the existing [structure] in this case was not easy because it’s not a high-design artifact. The project brought two old buildings back to life, uniting them with modern elements, and did not take anything away from the original structures. Scale is extremely well managed. The project uses a lot of material from existing historic structures and in this way is very sustainable.”

We celebrate with our client, Joe Svatos; contractor, Timber Built Construction; and our talented team on the continued success of this unique residence.

Solstice Baltimore – AIA | DC UNBUILT

Solstice Baltimore is the recipient of a 2014 Washington UNBUILT award, which recognizes excellence in design of unbuilt projects both theoretical and commissioned.

Solstice Baltimore transforms a 2.5-acre brownfield site in Baltimore’s post-industrial Locust Point neighborhood into an eight-story, mixed-use residential, commercial and retail building to energize and anchor the growing community. The unique design offers expansive views to Baltimore Harbor, Fort McHenry, Domino Sugar and Harbor East with faceted glazed facades and projecting balconies. The landscape design establishes a plinth of ‘Eastern Shore Wetlands’ and activity zones and raises green space to rooftop level while offering a novel, sensory and educational environment.

The District Architecture Center will present a small exhibition of the award-winning projects at the SIGAL Gallery. The exhibition, Local Designers | Global Visions, will be on view through early-to-mid September of this year. Congratulations to our talented staff and our landscape architect, Landscape Architecture Bureau on this important recognition.
