2002 11th Street, NW is a mixed-used, 10-story, 27-unit residential building designed in the District’s Historic U-Street corridor by Freelon Group in partnership with Bonstra Haresign Architects. The site has an illustrious past and consists of several consolidated lots, one of which hosts the historic Industrial Bank, one of the only remaining African American owned and operated banking institutions in the country. Mindful of this history, the architecture adds a contemporary layer to the DNA of the site, gracefully rising above and over the adjacent building with mildly projecting bays – a pattern ubiquitous in D.C. which helps the new building fit into its contextual surroundings. Its monochromatic palette serves as a humble backdrop to the historic structure while redefining the urban edge along U-Street.
