This converted 1920’s former automotive showroom, and new rooftop addition house some of the most dramatic, loft-style apartments in Washington, DC. Supported on carefully installed steel beams spanning full width due to structural limitations of the original building, the new metal-and-glass penthouse is oriented to maximize views to the city below. A new surgically inserted building core serving all levels links the internal parking garage, second-floor loft and ground-level restaurant, including a new elevator that is suspended within the building. The addition responds to the formal facade of its host with a center bay window with inside/outside fireplace and a projecting steel trellis/cornice. The addition was constructed while the building was occupied and while the restaurant was in operation.
